On Saturday, September 13 and Sunday, September 14, the Washington State Convention & Trade Center will be transformed into a marketplace of the best of today’s $151 billion travel industry showcasing the ultimate in active and experiential travel from across the country and around the world.
“Today, travel is all about experiencing the world,” said John Golicz, Unicomm’s CEO. “As the leading series of active and adventure travel events in the United States, The Adventures in Travel Expo will provide attendees with access to the best of the travel industry including experts who have explored some of the most exciting and far-flung destinations on Earth, trips spanning across the seven continents and hands-on activities – all the resources needed to plan the vacation of a lifetime.”
Attendees can interact with and comparison shop for hundreds of destinations, speak with travel experts and tour operators, attend expert seminars, experience hands-on adventure activities and observe unique cultural performances by artists including Balkan Cabaret, Bakra Bata Music & Dance, Show Brazil and many more on the Global Beats Stage. The ATE will feature trends, destinations and expert speakers including:
Ecotourism – Authentic Experiences
Today, travelers are more socially and environmentally conscious, making ecotourism or volunteer travel more common. Travelers want a sense of purpose in connection with their leisure activities, while in turn benefiting the host community and minimizing the negative aspects of conventional tourism. At the ATE, attendees will find a variety of authentic experiences to choose from including arctic expeditions to Antarctica and luxury camping safaris in Africa. G.A.P. Adventures, an award-winning adventure tour operator and environmentally friendly company, offers experiential vacations to more than 100 destinations across the globe including ground breaking polar travel aboard the new M/S Expedition. CC Africa, Africa’s leading ecotourism company committed to sustainable conservation and community empowerment, operates more than 45 safari lodges and camps in the wilderness of such locations as Sabi Sand Game Reserve, Serengeti National Park and the Namib Desert.
Thrill Seeking Adventures – Scuba Diving, Whitewater Rafting and Mountain Biking
In the past five years, approximately 98 million adults have taken an adventure travel trip, which according to the Adventure Travel Trade Association, is a trip that incorporates cultural immersion, environmental interaction or physical adventures such as scuba diving, whitewater rafting and mountain biking. Forever Resorts, a company offering houseboat vacations at 12 marinas across the country, provides renters with the perfect blend of active and passive pursuits offering access to activities like kayaking, scuba diving, cave exploring and stargazing. Summits Africa, a tourism group providing a range of adventure trips in East Africa, offers customized itineraries to rare locations ranging from biking trips across the Savanna Desert to high-altitude mountain climbing on Africa’s highest peaks. In addition, thrill seekers can discover adventures in their own Pacific Northwest backyard with Venture Outdoors offering wilderness adventures in the outskirts of Sun Valley, Idaho and Northwest Oregon.
Exotic Destinations – Asia, the Pacific and Beyond
With the 2008 Olympic Games in full swing in China and reasonable travel rates, exotic destinations like Asia and the Pacific have grown consistently popular with travelers. As an island nation in the South Pacific, Fiji has continued to develop its tourism opportunities offering travelers the Sigatoka River Safari, ZIP Fiji and the new luxury hotel, Intercontinental Resort Fiji, slated to open in 2009. On the Caribbean Island of Anguilla, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts and Conch Bay Development Ltd. will open a new luxury property in 2010. In addition, Big Five Tours, a premier luxury travel company, offers travelers distinctive journeys that span across Asia, the Orient and South Pacific.
Pacific Northwest Getaways – Family Vacations, Staycations and One-tank Trips
As the cost of living continues to rise, travelers are looking for ways to enjoy a vacation that is closer to home. Known for its beautiful coastline, green interior and spectacular mountains, the Pacific Northwest provides the perfect playground for the soft-adventure traveler or the more daring one. The ATE will feature an exhibit from the Idaho Department of Commerce showcasing such adventures as Idaho’s first Zipline Tour at Tamarack Resort nestled in the Payette River Mountains and ranch getaways at Red Horse Mountain in Coeur d’Alene. In addition, attendees can browse various vacations including Columbia River Gorge family retreats with Skamania Lodge and authentic Alaskan adventures with “Get Off The Boat!" (Fairbanks, Mat-Su, Kenai, Alaska).
